From the serene presence of the Dalai Lama to the primal force of an unbeaten Mike Tyson and the vigilante death squads of Manila - Bangkok based photographer Gerhard Joren has witnessed it all.
Standing tall at six-foot-five, he’s impossible to miss, yet Joren’s gift lies in making himself invisible. He waits patiently, often days, sometimes weeks - however long it takes for his subjects to forget the camera and reveal themselves.
"I’m like an elephant in the room," he admits with a laugh. "But I want the shot to feel like I was never there." Having traversed the globe with a curious and unflinching eye, Joren’s calm, subtle approach has opened unexpected doors to less explored worlds - bustling Nevada brothels, Kim Yong II’s birthday celebrations in North Korea, behind the scenes of a Japanese adult movie - it has certainly been a wild, eye-opening ride.
“I consider myself a traveller with a camera,” confides the Swedish-born wanderer, “I take photographs to survive. By getting great shots, I keep the journey going.”
As a 24 year old with no formal training, Joren headed to America and reinvented himself in the gritty heart of 1980s New York, sleeping on couches and in train stations, hustling for work, forever wrestling with the inevitable ‘imposter syndrome’. Yet, through sheer persistence and timely twists of fate, Joren carved out an exhilarating career that has candidly captured the beauty, brutality and quiet dignity of the human experience.
“I’ve been blessed by many decisive moments, chance encounters that have led to new paths and opportunities,” he explains. “Photography isn’t about technicalities - the f-stops and lenses - it’s about being in the right place at the right time and respecting the humanity of everyone you photograph.”
Now, for the first time, the most compelling images from Joren’s gritty, globe-spanning photographic odyssey have been gathered together in a single exhibition - Walk on the Wild Side.
A total of 120 eye-catching black and white images for mature audiences only (18+) will be displayed over three floors at Chaloem La Art House, a new gallery opposite Bangkok Graffiti Park (one minute walk from Ratchathewi BTS).
“It’s such an honour to share Joren’s incredible photography with the people of Bangkok,” says gallery owner, Pumarin Wilkinson. “The exhibition is filled with A-list portraits - the Dalai Lama, Mike Tyson, Manny Pacquiao, Alex Ferguson, Joaquin Cortes - but I find his documentary photography the most captivating. This exhibition takes you on Joren’s journey. We meet the people he encountered: the citizens of North Korea, the gangsters, assassins and executioners of Manila, the strippers in Nevada, an adult movie actress in Japan, a British lesbian rock band living an alternative pagan lifestyle in an old house in France. This exhibition is like no other - quirky, poignant, gritty, unflinching - it’s a must see!”

“ผมเป็นแค่นักเดินทางที่มีกล้อง” เจอราร์ด เยอเรน กล่าวด้วยรอยยิ้มสงบในร้านกาแฟเงียบ ๆ กลางกรุงเทพฯ ปัจจุบันเขาอายุ 66 ปี และเกษียณแล้วอย่างเป็นทางการ แต่ชีวิตของช่างภาพชาวสวีเดนคนนี้ยังคงเต็มไปด้วยเรื่องราวราวกับนิยาย — เต็มไปด้วยความบังเอิญ ความกล้า และความเป็นมนุษย์ที่ไม่ผ่านการกรอง
นิทรรศการ Walk on the Wild Side ที่ เฉลิมหล้า อาร์ต เฮ้าส์ คือผลงานย้อนหลังครั้งแรกในไทยของเขา ภาพขาวดำ 120 ภาพ ถ่ายทอดเรื่องราวจากทั่วโลก — จากองค์ดาไลลามะ สู่แก๊งฆ่าล้างบางในมะนิลา ไปจนถึงเบื้องหลังหนังผู้ใหญ่ในญี่ปุ่น
“การถ่ายภาพช่วยให้ผมอยู่รอด” เขากล่าวอย่างเรียบง่าย “ผมไม่มีแผนอะไร ตอนอายุ 24 ผมออกจากสวีเดนพร้อมกล้องตัวเดียว นอนตามสถานีรถไฟในนิวยอร์ก แอบเข้าอีเวนต์ ถ่ายทุกอย่างเพื่อให้ได้ภาพดี ๆ สักภาพ”
เมื่อถามว่าเขาเข้าไปในโลกที่เข้าถึงยากได้อย่างไร เขาตอบว่า “ผมหายตัวได้” เขาหัวเราะเบา ๆ “ผมรอ ผมฟัง ผมอยู่ตรงนั้นจนคนลืมว่ามีกล้อง แล้วตอนนั้นแหละ ภาพที่แท้จริงจึงปรากฏ”
แม้จะสูงถึง 195 ซม. ความสามารถพิเศษของเยอเรนไม่ใช่การโดดเด่น แต่คือการมองเห็นและเข้าถึงโดยไม่รุกราน ภาพของเขาจึงเต็มไปด้วยความเคารพในเรื่องราวของผู้อื่น
ภุมรินทร์ วิลคินสัน เจ้าของแกลเลอรี่กล่าวว่า “ไม่ใช่แค่คนในภาพ แต่มันคือวิธีที่เกอฮาร์ดทำให้เรารู้สึกเหมือนยืนอยู่ตรงนั้นกับเขา เรารู้สึกถึงความเสี่ยง ความเงียบ ความหนัก และบางครั้งก็ความตลกร้าย”
นิทรรศการนี้เตือนใจว่า เบื้องหลังข่าว เบื้องหลังความรุนแรงหรือความแปลกใหม่ ยังมีเรื่องของ ‘คน’ เสมอ และนั่นคือสิ่งที่เยอเรนภาคภูมิใจที่สุด
“คนเปิดใจให้ผมเข้าไปในชีวิตของพวกเขา — บางครั้งแค่ชั่วครู่ บางครั้งก็นานกว่านั้น หน้าที่ของผมคือเคารพความไว้ใจนั้น”
